Garfield was a horse we took in off racing towards the end of last year\. He is 9 years old and quite a big boy at approx 16\.3hh\. We initially thought he would be quick to find a home and we do in fact have many approved adopters looking for this size of horse \\

While our aim is to find our horses a home as quickly as possible so we may make space to keep on taking in new horses, it is also our responsibility to make sure each horse gets the best chance of the home he goes to working out well and being long\-term\! \\

Since being with us Garfield has been quite easy to handle from the ground\. A little impatient when tied but nothing out of the ordinary for some trotters with more active brains \\

\\ \ \

When ridden though Garfield showed a napping habit when asked to walk out of the yard\. Once he was out he would happily carry on as long as he wasn't leading\. In fact could be ridden by a novice once the 'walking out the yard' bit was over\. We initially gave him some time to see if this issue would get better but the last time he had a rider on board he reared up at the gate so we had to rethink our plan with him\.\ \ \

We decided to let him have a couple of weeks break\. Introduced him to a group of 4 other geldings in a barn where they get ad\-lib hay and just let him be for a couple of weeks\. Yesterday we brought him out for a much needed groom\. Garfield's issue is behavioural\. He shows reluctance to walk out the gate even if not ridden\. So we have decided to spend some time trying to get him to associate walking out the gate with positive happy things like going out for grass\. We are certain he will improve and then we will be able to find him the perfect home \\

In the meantime being given a break has done him good as we can no longer see his ribs\!\\
